The restaurant sizzles with life—couples engaged in whispers and friends exchanging stories in exuberant tones. The citrus and black decor should be gauche, but instead sets an intimate atmosphere.

As they chat, the crowd at the bar becomes dense, and the hostess maneuvers through the waiting diners until she arrives at their table. “Mr. Salzmann, the chef would like to offer you a complimentary plate of our newest dish, an Asian Fusion rack of lamb. I’m sure you and your date will enjoy it.”

He recoils and squints his eyes, as if trying to make out a distant shape. “What kind of question is that?”

She shrugs. Used to disappointment, she’s ready to walk away. “If you don’t tell me, I’m going to assume the worst.”
“No, I have never bought or sold a human being. Fuck.”
“Good, then you get a reprieve on full disclosure until next Thursday.”
He leans back in his chair and studies her again. “You are an extremely interesting woman.”
“So you’ve said.” She takes another sip of wine.

They become friends and Sy for the first time in a long time feels the weight of his past lifting off his shoulders. It's a bumpy ride for these two, but Sy stays vigilant in his pursuit of Holly.
